CA dismisses petition for arrest of Wimal

COLOMBO: The Court of Appeal yesterday dismissed the writ application filed by NGO activist Kumar Rupasinghe seeking the arrest of JVP Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa.

This was sequel to an application made by Upul Jayasuriya counsel for petitioner Kumar Rupasinghe.

He made the application to withdraw the matter following submissions made by State Counsel that there wasn't sufficient grounds to initiate criminal action against Wimal Weerawansa for his arrest. The Bench comprised Justices K. Sripavan and Sisira De Abrew.

Petitioner filed an application in connection with a speech made by Wimal Weerawansa at a public rally in Maharagama. Petitioner stated that MP Weerawansa made adverse references about his NGO activities.
