development

KANDY: The Central Provincial Council should contribute towards
creating a new Sri Lanka by consolidating President Mahinda Rajapakse's
new vision of clean administration, new economic pattern, law-abidance
in a peaceful society and investment for the people," said Central
Provincial Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa opening the new sessions of the
Central Provincial Council.
In keeping with the tradition the Governor after receiving the guard
of honour by the police, hoisted the National Flag while Chief Minister
Sarath Ekanayake hoisted the council flag.
Thereafter the governor was conducted to the Assembly hall where the
chief minister handed over to him the policy statement.
Kobbekaduwa added that the Central Province comprising a number of
broad environmental zones enjoy a special place in the field of
agriculture. If that was made use of to the maximum the poverty in the
province could be minimised. Steps should be taken to make use of the
available land through providing water for paddy and vegetable
cultivation by reconstruction and maintenance of minor irrigation
schemes thus implementing a better water management.
It was necessary to introduce modern technology to the farmer
community and also make them aware of systems to prevent post harvest
losses of produce.
While initiating legal steps in that direction, awareness programmes
too would be implemented, he added. Special programme is drawn to raise
the standard in the field of education and to provide material resources
to rural schools in difficult areas and to implement a system to solve
problems faced by teachers. Steps would be taken to sort out the
shortage of teachers quarters, he added. |
