Proposed legislation to control tobacco, alcohol use welcomed
INTERNATIONAL Federation of Non-Government Organisation for the
Prevention of Drug and Substance Abuse has supported the proposed
legislation to control tobacco and alcohol use and congratulated Ven.
Omalpe Sobitha for initiating the move.
The federation in a statement said:
"We have representation by way of Federations of NGOs in 40
countries. There are also eight regional and international organisations
who are members and 28 associated members, which include a number of
European countries and Canada as well as others from our region.
We are aware of the proposed legislation to set up an authority to
implement a process to control and reduce harm from tobacco and alcohol
use. This is a long overdue step.
We recall that Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to draft
legislation in this regard but unfortunately due to many reasons it was
not followed-up with the desired action.
Today many countries have already taken the lead in implementing
these measures because of their far-sighted leadership and policy
makers.
Tobacco and alcohol are the most dangerous and addictive substance
easily accessible to our youth.
It is also the gateway to narcotic drug use and the main contributory
factor of poverty and crime.
We are certain that all right thinking persons will support this
legislation and also ensure its effective implementation.
The IFNGO too offers its support and congratulates Ven. Omalpe
Sobitha for initiating this move." |
