Programme to promote coconut cultivation
More Coconuts will be grown in Sri Lanka to meet the rising demand.
The Coconut Cultivation Board (CCB) has ear-marked over 20,000 acres of
land for this purpose.
Both the Coconut Development Authority (CDA) and Coconut Cultivation
Board (CCB) have jointly introduced a project to promote coconut
cultivation to meet the future challenges.
Coconut Cultivation Board sources said that over Rs.11 million has
been allocated in this regard in addition to Rs.20 million set aside for
the industry's development.
The Board will encourage to grow more coconut in every available land
in every district and preference will be given to small land owners
providing every assistance to make the project a success.
Those owning half acre to five acres of land will be provided with
coconut saplings and necessary fertiliser at a concessionary price, the
sources added.
CDA and CCB wanted to ensure that the cultivators and the consumers
enjoy benefit of growing and using coconut.They wanted to see that while
the consumer get coconuts at a reasonable price, the cultivators too get
their dues.
A Committee has been appointed to study the problems related to
coconut growing and selling. |
