Federation of National Organisations commend President's stance

The Federation of the National Organisations yesterday commending the stance taken by President Mahinda Rajapakse to resume peace negotiations declared that the Presidents' stand has come in for increased international praise.

Secretary of the National Bhikku Front Ven. Dr. Dambara Amila Thera said President Rajapakse has clearly expressed his stance on the resumption of peace talks. Therefore a more stable situation can be created by educating the people on this position, Ven. Amila Thera told a media briefing in Colombo yesterday.

The thera also accused several non-governmental organisations and some private media institutions which are acting to paint the LTTE in a favourable light. Especially some NGOs under the pretext of protecting human rights are fully backing the LTTE. These NGOs betray both country and their own soul by extending their support to Prabhakaran to gain his demands.

The representatives from the Patriotic National Movement(PNM), National Bhikku Front, Patriotic Bhikku Front, Ruhunu Rata Bhikku Front, National Integration Committee, University Lecturers Front attended the press briefing chaired by Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera of the PNM.

The LTTE's attempt to win its demands through the gun has completely failed following the mandate given to President Rajapakse by the people of the South to put an end to the ethnic problem by safeguarding the unitary structure of the country.

In this situation, the LTTE has to settle this problem through negotiations, he said. The LTTE strategy is to use negotiations to obtain the maximum demands possible for it , the ISGA or something going further than that, he said.

At present various violent activities are being resorted to by the LTTE to intimidate the Government and create a dissension within the armed forces. The LTTE through such activities are attempting to create anarchy in the country, he said. "All patriotic citizens who want to safeguard our motherland and its unitary structure have to play a more responsible role to defeat this LTTE move," the thera said.

Chairman of the National Integration Committee Dr. Piyasena Dissanayake said a new approach is needed to resume peace talks. At the recently concluded Presidential Election, the people have taken a firm decision electing President Rajapakse to safeguard the unitary status of the country. The Government should force the LTTE to resume talks by giving up its Eelam demand.

Peace talks should be resumed on the basis that the unitary structure is upheld. The Government should resume peace talks to fulfil the people's aspirations , he said.

Secretary of the Patriotic Bhikku Front Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera said at present, the LTTE has taken an entirely different approach in a situation where its power has been diminished in the Eastern province.

"The present strategy followed by the LTTE is to provoke the security forces to attack them and re-commence the war. Another tactic of the LTTE is to get the civilians attacked by the security forces. The intention of the LTTE is to create an international pressure and get the control in the Jaffna peninsula under the LTTE control.

"However, our security forces are acting in a responsible manner" he said.
