All-party meeting on MPs expulsion issue

New Delhi, Friday (PTI) - Lok Sabha Speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, has convened an all-party meeting to discuss the situation arising out of the Delhi High Court notice to Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha, Election Commission and the Centre on the expulsion of MPs. Chatterjee said he wanted to seek the opinion of leaders of political parties on the matter.

Maintaining that the courts had no jurisdiction in the matter, he said the meeting was intended to get the views of leaders of different political parties. Some lawyers have been invited for the meeting to have a legal opinion in connection with the issue.

The Delhi High Court had issued notices to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats, Election Commission and the Centre on January 9 on petitions by eight of the 11 MPs challenging their expulsion in the "cash for questions" scam.

The BJP had described the convening of the all-party meet as "inappropriate" and said the move could set the legislature and the judiciary on a collision course.
