Police team to Chennai on trail of drug barons

A high powered Police team attached to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) will leave for India shortly to seek assistance from the Chennai Branch of the Interpol to arrest several local drug lords who fled the country amidst intensified Police crackdown on the heroin trade.

"We have reliable information that several hardcore drug dealers have crossed the borders following the stepped up raids," a high ranking police officer told the Daily News.

CCD officials are in the possession of several important clues regarding heroin peddlers who left the country to evade Police arrest.

All police stations conducted special operations to arrest hard drug traffickers on the direction of Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando.

Several hard drug traffickers including a woman from Borella involved in hard drug trafficking on large scale with the assistance of several police personnel were arrested during 'Strangers Night' operations conducted countrywide.

The Colombo Crimes Division led by Senior SP Sarath Lugoda and his police team arrested several police personnel allegedly involved in assisting hard drug traffickers in the Colombo Division.

Earlier, the IGP had instructed all police stations to carry out probes on errant cops involved in hard drug trafficking irrespective of their positions.
