Flood threat in Polonnaruwa

Incessant rain in the Polonnaruwa district during the last few days
has created a serious flood threat. Flood waters of the Mahaweli Ganga
has submerged parts of Medirigiriya, Pamburana, Palliyagodella and
Gurugodella areas.
Several canals have also overflowed submerging about 15,000 acres of
paddy land in the region, an Irrigation Department spokesman said.
An Irrigation Engineer said the Parakrama Samudra is almost near
spill level and warned its flood gates would have to be opened if the
rain continued for a few more days. |
