Victoria close to spill level
by Indika Polkotuwa
Engineers warned yesterday that residents should refrain from bathing
in the catchment area of Victoria Dam as the reservoir was close to
overflowing.
Yesterday's water level was 437.7 m above sea level, one foot less
than spill level, engineer S.R.K. Aruppala said.
The water level has increased as a result of incessant rains in Kandy
and the environs.
This is the highest water level recorded in seven years.
The spillover occurs when the level reaches 438.04 metres. The sluice
gates open automatically to let the excess water out. |
