JVP requests Government : Appointments purely on merit

The JVP has requested the Government to ensure that all new recruitments of Public Service non staff grade management assistants and Grama Niladharis are done according to the marks obtained at a competitive examination conducted by the Department of Examinations as set out in Public Administration circular nos. 15/90 and 15/91.

In a memorandum addressed to the Government, the JVP said the decision to make use of a competitive examination for making recruitments to the Public Service was made on the recommendations of the 1990 youth unrest commission report.

This system was utilised to ensure recruitments to the Public Service were not done according to any political considerations and appointments were done purely on merit.

The memorandum alleged that the Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry was making arrangements to abandon this practice and make recruitments to the Management Assistants and Grama Niladhari Service on its own after submitting a Cabinet memorandum in this regard.

If this was done it would cause a grave injustice to a large number of youth expecting job opportunities for them, the memorandum has pointed out.
