Four drown in boat tragedy
 

THREE members of the same family drowned in the Inginimitiya reservoir in Galgamuwa along with a relative who went to rescue them, OIC Galgamuwa Police station E. S. Dayaratna told the Daily News.

G. B. Rupawathi menike, 36, from Kurunegala, Ratkarawa area was killed along with her daughter Nilanthi Priyantha, 11, and son Dhanushka Niroshan 13, when the canoe toppled after the oars broke suddenly in the mid of the Inginimitiya reservoir, he added.

They had gone canoeing in the Inginimitiya reservoir after visiting a relative, the OIC added.

H. Ranhamy, 48, who rowed the canoe drowned after rescuing two persons.

"There had been eight people on the canoe at the time of the accident. Two had swum ashore. Two persons were rescued by Ranhamy," police said.

"Ranhamy drowned when he tried to rescue the mother and the two children after saving the two other persons," he added.
