Possession of firearms:

Foreigner, local further remanded

A foreigner and a local taken into custody by Cinnamon Garden Police for allegedly possessing firearms were yesterday further remanded till January 20 by Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena.

The two suspects produced before court are Fijian Jimmy Bola and Joseph Luman of Kundasale.

Producing the two suspects, Cinnamon Garden Police moved the court to release them on bail.

At this stage, Judge Weerawardena observed that court has no power to release the suspects as they have been produced under the Firearms Ordinance.

"I am surprised that police made this application to release the suspects produced under a non-bailable offence," Judge Weerawardena told Cinnamon Garden Police officers.

Cinnamon Garden Police told court that they searched a house at Barnes Place, Colombo 7 on a search warrant from the Magistrate and found a 9mm pistol, several parts of two revolvers and 197 live bullets.

The house owner was not home when Police searched it.

The Judge directed police to submit a further report in connection with their investigations into the arrest on the next date.
