Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and President Mahinda
Rajapakse deplored the recent attacks on the Security Forces and the
violations of the Ceasefire Agreement by the LTTE which could undermine
the prospects of peace in Sri Lanka.
In a joint statement issued here in New Delhi, the two leaders stated
that both countries remain regularly committed to opposing terrorism in
all its form and manifestations while reiterating that terrorism can
never be justified either on political, religious or on ideological
grounds.
The Indian side welcomed the Sri Lankan Government's offer of early
resumption of peace talks. Both countries emphasised the need for the
strict observance of the ceasefire and immediate resumption of talks
aimed at strengthening the ceasefire.
President Mahinda Rajapakse briefed the Indian leaders on his
approach to the peace process to achieve maximum devolution which
preserves the unity and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka. India
reiterated its support for a process of seeking a negotiated political
settlement acceptable to all sections of Sri Lankan society within the
framework of an undivided Sri Lanka and consistent with democracy,
pluralism and respect for human rights.
India also expressed hope that a political settlement of the ethnic
issue based on devolution, openness, transparency and inclusivity would
emerge through negotiations between the parties concerned so as to
ensure a peaceful and bright future for all Sri Lankans in an undivided
and democratic Sri Lanka.
