Women cricketers leave for Asia Cup in Pakistan

The Sri Lanka women's cricket team sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka Limited will leave for Pakistan on December 25 to participate in the inaugural women's Asia Cup to be staged from December 26 to January 5, 2006.

The 18 member Sri Lanka team will be captained by Sashikala Siriwardena. The other two teams competing in this tournament are India and the hosts Pakistan.

The Sri Lanka Women's Cricket Association is directly under Sri Lanka Cricket by virtue of being under the ICC with effect from this year.

Sri Lanka are currently ranked sixth in the world and India are second while Pakistan are not yet ranked.

Last month Gwen Herat President of the Women's Cricket Association of Sri Lanka and the women's committee of Sri Lanka Cricket was in Lahore for the arrangements for the Asia Cup series.

The Women's Wing of the Pakistan Cricket Board is in charge of the tour arrangements.
