Cabinet decisions

THE Cabinet has approved a memorandum earlier forwarded by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to hold special tsunami commemoration events on December 26. These religious ceremonies and awareness programmes will be held at Pereliya, Kalmunai and Jaffna.

A proposal of Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Sarath Amunugama to restrict the calling of district secretaries and government agents to Colombo to a single monthly conference has also received Cabinet approval.

The Cabinet greenlight was also given to a memorandum by President Mahinda Rajapakse in his capacity as Finance Minister to amend the credit agreement between Sri Lanka and India for the purchase of wheat from India, to include the import of buses.

A proposal of Minister Douglas Devananda to set up social care centres in divisional secretariats affected by the tsunami also received Cabinet approval.

Under the first phase of the project, social care centres will be set up in Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Batticaloa, Mullaitivu, Trincomalee, Jaffna and Killinochchi.
