Binupa takes the lead on day two
The 15 yearold Binupa Wijesinghe took over the lead in the Milo
Junior Golf Championship of Sri Lanka which is currently underway at the
prestigious Royal Colombo Golf Club. The championship which is open to
all children under 18 years of age saw a wide participation, indicating
the growing level of interest in Golf in Sri Lanka. Golf is now the
fastest growing sport in the world.
Current champion of the Victoria Milo Junior Championship, Vijitha
Bandara, son of Victoria Golf & Country Resorts Green Keeper who led
after the first round with a score of 73 yesterday, faltered in his
chipping & putting in the second round to post a disappointing 82 today.
He is joined by Vinoth Kumar from Nuwara Eliya Golf Club who played
steady golf to be tied on 3rd place at 155 gross score with scores of 76
and 79.
Young Binupa who represented Sri Lanka in India early this year and
who won the Nuwara Eliya Junior championship 2005 showed tremendous
maturity to follow up his 74 in the 1st round with a sensational sub-par
round of 70 in the 2nd round to take the lead from Vijitha by 11
strokes.
An incredible par round of 71 which followed his 79 on the first day,
by another very promising youngster Zen Dharmaratne, saw him moving into
the number 2 spot after round 2 of this 3 round tournament.
Anything can happen on the final day in this game which is full of
uncertainty.
Meanwhile Richard Gunawardene heads the under 15 category with a
total of 168.
