Scholarships for expatriate workers' children

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has called applications for the award of scholarships to children of Sri Lankan workers employed abroad for the year 2006.

SLBFE Chairman Jagath Wellawatte said under this programme students who passed the year 5 scholarship examination will receive Rs. 15,000 each while those who have passed the G.C.E. 'O' Level examination and qualified to follow A/L classes will receive Rs. 20,000 each. Students qualified to pursue University or Technical College education or Diploma Courses will receive Rs. 30,000 each.

Children seeking Year 5 scholarships should ensure that their mother or father was employed abroad between 20.8.2002 and 19.8.2005 after gaining registration at the SLBFE.

Those seeking A/L scholarships should ensure that their mother or father was employed abroad between 1.1.2002 and 31.12.2005 after registration with the SLBFE. Those seeking University, Technical College or Diploma scholarships should ensure that their mother or father was employed abroad between 1.1.2003 and 31.12.2005 after registration with the Bureau.

Mr. Wellawatte said the SLBFE has so far spent Rs. 34,655,000 on this scholarship programme which has benefited 1,761 students.
