Accepting bribes: PC, meter reader nabbed

The Officers of the Bribery Commission yesterday arrested a Police Constable attached to the Special Crime Investigation Bureau of the Kandy Police and a meter reader attached to Ceylon Electricity Board, Kandy office for taking bribes for two different cases.

Director Investigations of the Bribery Commission SP Neville Guruge told the Daily News that a Police Constable attached to Kandy Police was arrested for accepting Rs. 20,000 from a party to extend his help at a court hearing over a disputed three-wheeler.

The investigation officers arrested the Police Constable when he was accepting the agreed money from the relevant party at the Kandy Courts Complex premises yesterday morning, he added.

The Police Constable was produced before Kandy Magistrate and remanded till December 23. The Investigation Officers from Colombo on a complaint received from a consumer also arrested a meter reader attached to the CEB Kandy office when he was accepting a bribe of Rs. 1,000 from a consumer.

"The meter reader had a habit of breaking electricity meters in Deltota area and soliciting Rs. 2,000 from each consumer to repair the meter", SP Guruge added.

The Investigation Officers arrested the man when he was accepting Rs. 1,000 from a consumer in Deltota, Kandy. He had earlier accepted Rs. 1,000 from the same consumer promising to repair the meter, he added.

He was also due to be produced before Kandy Magistrate last evening.
