Police Force must be modernised as enunciated in "Mahinda Chinthana"
-Defence Advisor
Former Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police H.M.B.G.
Kotakadeniya who assumed duties as Advisor to the Minister of Defence on
Police matters on December 12 said that his prime task is to implement
the provision in the "Mahinda Chintana" Election Manifesto to modernise
the Police Department to serve the modern day needs of the people.
Kotakadeniya who joined the Police Department in 1966 and retired as
Senior DIG in 2002 said that he would under the guidance and direction
of Secretary Defence discuss with the IGP and senior police officers in
working out programmes and various measures to meet the modern day
security requirements and maintenance of law and order.
He said that it was his aim to utilise the existing manpower and
physical resource of the Police Department to maximum extent possible to
provide adequate security to the people and also help eliminate
drawbacks and impediments.
"I feel that a lot of these resources are misused or wasted at
present and not fully utilised to provide services to the people. In the
present context the police should be fully geared to provide security to
the people so that they could lead a life without fear" said Mr.
Kotakadeniya.
One of the important tasks ahead is to ensure discipline in the
Police Service which is sadly lacking in some areas, he said. Some do
not do the jobs allotted to them properly and are not at their stations
every often specially at weekends. Discipline is an essential
requirement to maintain an efficient police service, Kotakadeniya added. |
