WTO's ministerial meeting would be decisive says Green Party

The Green Party of Sri Lanka said the 6th Ministerial Meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) due to begin on December 13 would be a decisive one for Sri Lanka where it should desist from endorsing any proposals which would undermine its sovereignty, democracy, economic principles and environmental justice.

In a press release issued yesterday the Green Party alleged that crafty plans that would enable Multinationals to gain control over the agricultural, industrial and service sectors of country's like Sri Lanka may come up for adoption at this meeting.

The release signed by Green Party Secretary Dr. Prasanna Cooray further said GATS, AOA and NAMA treaties which could not be adopted at the Doha Conference in 2001 and the Cancun Conference in 2003 may again come up for adoption at this meeting.

These treaties if adopted would spell down to our local industrial, agricultural and service sectors handled by farmers and small and medium scale entrepreneurs.
