Over 100 trees planted at the CTC's annual forestry week
The annual forestry week of Ceylon Tobacco Company was held last
month. During this week all employees, farmers, villagers of tobacco
growing areas, forces and all government officials joined to plant over
a thousand trees in their respective areas. This project organised by
CTC has been in operation for over 15 years.
In addition to the afforestation block maintained by the Company, CTC
believes in constantly encouraging people to plant a tree for a better
tomorrow.
This project over the past years has proved to be a success with the
participation of people of all walks of life.
This year too the forestry week, took place throughout the island
with many activities including planting of trees, distribution of
seedlings, vacancy filling and fertilising the existing plants. Some of
the participants included AGA's, police, priests, villagers and company
staff who participated in planting varieties including Indigenous
medicinal plants, Mahogany, Neem, Jack, Kumbuk, Lime and Lemon.
In addition to this campaign Ceylon Tobacco maintains a forestry
block of 1250 acres in the areas of Naula, Ududumbara, Haliella and
Bowlana. These blocks have been termed as the best man made forests in
Sri Lanka.
CTC's contribution to the environment has helped prevent soil erosion
and enrich the soil whilst increasing the forest cover, which has
contributed to the improvement of biodiversity. |
