Prof. Niriella retires

EXPERT on Forensic Medicine Professor Chandrasiri Niriella, a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Ruhunu University, retires after 30 years service on Monday.

Professor Niriella who received his primary education at Royal Primary, Colombo joined Thurstan College, Colombo to complete his secondary education.

He passed out from the Medical College, Colombo as a Physician in 1967 and received his first appointment as a Doctor at the General Hospital, Badulla.

After a spell of service at the Government Hospital, Haputale, he went to England to read for his post graduation in Forensic Medicine in England.

On his return after post graduation in 1975, he was appointed senior lecturer of the Peradeniya University after which he accepted appointment to the Ruhunu University when it was opened in 1980. He remains in this post till his retirement on Monday.

Professor Niriella conducted post-mortem examinations on bodies exhumed from mass graves of Suriya Kanda, Chemmini, Bosnia, Cyprus and East Timor. He was reckoned as the next best to late Professor Nandadasa Kodagoda as an authority on Forensic Medicine locally and internationally.

Born on December 5, 1940, Professor Niriella is a native of Niriella, Ratnapura.
