Visiting Southern Command Chief of the Indian Army Lt.Gen. B.S. Takhar observed civilian movements and military activities in Omanthai yesterday, Army sources said. Lt. Gen Takhar was received by the Brigade commander in Wanni A. Perera.

The Indian General visited the Omanthai checkpoint where civilians who travel between North and South are checked by the Army. The General saw day-to-day activity in Omanthai and observed the military's Forward Defence Line. Gen. Takhar is the second senior Indian Army official to visit Omanthai.

The Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) which was in the North and East to implement the Indo-Lanka accord had a major military camp in Omanthai.

Meanwhile, military sources said a group of fishermen who went fishing in Palliyawatte sea in Kalpitiya had found a box containing four six pounder variety ammunition in their fishing net on Wednesday.

The lethal ammunition is now in the custody of Kalpitiya police. Initial investigations have revealed that the ammunition belonging to the Navy had fallen into the sea some years ago.
