Indian General visits Omanthai

Visiting Southern Command Chief of the Indian Army Lt.Gen. B.S.
Takhar observed civilian movements and military activities in Omanthai
yesterday, Army sources said. Lt. Gen Takhar was received by the Brigade
commander in Wanni A. Perera.
The Indian General visited the Omanthai checkpoint where civilians
who travel between North and South are checked by the Army. The General
saw day-to-day activity in Omanthai and observed the military's Forward
Defence Line. Gen. Takhar is the second senior Indian Army official to
visit Omanthai.
The Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) which was in the North and East
to implement the Indo-Lanka accord had a major military camp in Omanthai.
Meanwhile, military sources said a group of fishermen who went
fishing in Palliyawatte sea in Kalpitiya had found a box containing four
six pounder variety ammunition in their fishing net on Wednesday.
The lethal ammunition is now in the custody of Kalpitiya police.
Initial investigations have revealed that the ammunition belonging to
the Navy had fallen into the sea some years ago. |
