Uninfected should not develop superior complex over the infected
by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi
Prof. Diyanath Samarasinghe yesterday observed that those not
affected by AIDS should not develop a superior complex over victims of
the deadly scourge.
"One should not feel superior that one is uninfected by HIV. Instead
one should be more concerned about this matter, Prof. Samarasinghe said.
"How many of us feel superior to someone who is HIV positive ? Is an
HIV negative case any superior to a HIV positive one ? questioned Prof.
Samarasinghe.
While urging not to think superior, he said," question things
logically. "Don't fear to go by evidence. Don't fear to seek evidence
and don't smoke. Carry enough condoms", he said delivering the keynote
address at a Seminar for National Level Policy Makers and Administrators
to mark World AIDS Day at the BMICH yesterday.
He stressed that merely relying on slogans would not help effectively
prevent HIV AIDS.
Prof. Samarasinghe cited practising abstinence as much as possible,
being faithful to one's partner(own spouse) and using condoms (if you
can't be faithful) would help prevent HIV AIDS.
He explained that it is easier to stop spreading of HIV AIDS."There
are no commercial or trade obstacles, it is not spread by air, water or
transcontinental birds. Besides, effective treatments are also
available. It needs clear commitment and promises to act," he said.
Prof. Samarasinghe said it is easier to make a promise than to keep
it."But keeping this promise should not really be too difficult."
He said despite the fact that it is easy to fight against HIV AIDS,
the progress so far is slow.
He said lack of funds is not the main problem preventing the spread
of this disease in Sri Lanka." We must examine determinants and learn
from evidence," he said.
Prof. Samarasinge also stressed opposing discrimination of HIV AIDS
infected persons."It helps treating victims, prevent further spread and
improve social well-being. Attention should be paid to promoting safer
sex he said. |
