Kanchana Abhayapala memorial lecture
The 15th annual Kanchana Abhayapala Memorial Lecture will be
delivered by world-renowned scientist, environmentalist and activist Dr.
Vandana Shiva.
The lecture 'Rejuvenating Life, Livelihood and the Environment: The
Post-Tsunami Human Rights Agenda' will be held at the BMICH on December
10 at 2 p.m.
Dr. Shiva is the founder of the Research Foundation for Science,
Technology and Ecology in Dehra Dun, India. The foundation is providing
biodiversity conservation while defending people's rights to a healthy
and sustainable environment for the past 23 year.
Dr. Shiva will be speaking about the significance of rejuvenating
lives and livelihoods through the betterment of the environment during
an important time for Sri Lanka, the approach of the one-year
anniversary of the tsunami that devastated the country. The programme
will commemorate the anniversary by highlighting relief efforts that
have been helping to rebuild the country throughout the years.
The event also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the establishment
of the Sarvodaya Legal Services Movement, which provides legal
empowerment to 15,000 villages across Sri Lanka through conflict
resolution, legal training and education.

rights activist
and lawyer Kanchana Abhayapala. |
