New body for tsunami reconstruction

A special institution has been established by President Mahinda Rajapakse to re-activate tsunami reconstruction, the Office of the President said yesterday.

This new institution was set up by amalgamating TAFREN, TAFOR and TAFLOL. This institution will review the progress of reconstruction in tsunami-hit districts and carry out work more effectively and efficiently.

The institution, headed by Tiran Alles, comprises four members - two each from the Finance Ministry and the Foreign Ministry. It will be instituted as the Authority of Reconstruction and Development by an Act of Parliament.
