Helmut Khol Foundation in Germany donates Rs. 3600 million for
rebuilding Mahamodera Hospital
The government of Germany has agreed to construct a fully equipped
Maternity and children Hospital in place of the Galle Mahamodara
Hospital which was destroyed by the tsunami. The Chancellor Helmutt Khol
Foundation of Germany has decided to provide Rs. 3600 million for the
construction of the said Hospital.
The Hospital will comprise of 85 beds and the German Government
expects to develop it as a special Maternity and Children Hospital,
stated Gugen Weerth, the Ambassador for Germany in Sri Lanka at a
special meeting held at the Ministry of Health on Tuesday.
A land with an extent of four acres, belonging to the Department of
Irrigation has been identified for this purpose, and the acquisition of
the land has already been completed and the agreement for the
construction of the hospital is due to be signed soon.
The foundation stone for construction of the Hospital will be laid by
President Mahinda Rajapakse on December 27. A special group of envoys
from the Helmut Khol Foundation of Germany is due to arrive in Sri Lanka
to participate at this event.
Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition Nimal Siripala de Silva stated
the construction of new hospital would held uplift of the quality of
Maternity and Children's Healthcare of the people in the Southern
Province.
