No lead role from the 'leaders'

Ringside Review by Afreeha Jawad A warmer antarctica as is widely speculated, will gradually lead to a multiplicity of problems, extending upto, in fact even risking the earth's countdown needless to say man's existence itself.

The sea's swelling-up following that region's colossal ice mountain melting as a result of global warming has brought on added discredit to both man and animal while the world map according to prevailing belief may have to be redrawn as territorial outlines shift from their original stand.

The dwindling number of area-friendly animals, such as seals, polar bears and walruses now indeed cause much heartburn to the populace over there. The season's delays - the latest being the winter's late entry - has also intensified social anxiety.

Yet, none apparently are keen in arresting the tragedy - no, not even the world's powerful that scream sky high on social justice and a peaceful world let alone their hunt after weapons of mass destruction.

What equally great destruction could be caused, one may ask, following uncontrolled green house emissions that threaten the earth's existence itself, wrapping up life big and small. The economic thrust amid high speed industrialization, the relentless exploitation of the earth's offering, the guest for aggrandizement, initiative towards world hegemony, have in no unmistakable terms facilitated the rape of the earth.

The failure to comply with the Kyoto Protocol, seemingly an attempt overriding even whatever may have been the outcome of the assumed weapons of mass destruction, testifies the dubiousness and duplicity of whoever is supposedly into world well-being.

Come to think of it, the signing and ratifying of international covenants it looks like is of no importance when seen against the backdrop of the refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocol. These covenants though reputed as they are to protecting the social, economic and cultural well-being of people the world over have much to do with that refusal. Accordingly, it is the people's right to better and cleaner environment.

Therefore a concerted effort on the part of people throughout the world to exert more pressure on those responsible to comply with Kyoto hopefully could bear fruitful results in bringing sense to such quarters of the importance of environmental well- being.

Besides, it is time that the world's most powerful take the lead in positive measures and be emulation worthy to others. The lead role it plays in world hegemony undermining the importance of other nations alone would not suffice. That role must be transformed into one of world good resulting in more positive changes towards environmental well-being let alone of others, even for their own existence .
