Binupa and Niloo still in the lead

Despite missing the last month's competition Binupa Wijesinghe (Men's Gross), Niloo Jayatillake (Ladies' Gross), Klans Rasmussen (Men's Nett) and Maleena Awn (Ladies' Nett) continue to head the table of points at the Lectra Golf Championships at the end of the fifth round on the golf competition organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by Apparel Technologies which is conducted every month at Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella.

Fifteen-year-old schoolboy from Wycherly International School - Binupa who gave the last medal round a miss continues to lead the Men's Gross Division with 195 points. But Englishman Ian Tait who had 145 points at the end of the fourth round has bridged a gap a little by totalling 157 points by getting 12 points after the last round.

At present this duo are top favourites to win the prestigious Men's Gross title with Srinivas Rao too throwing in a challenge with 81 points.

While Englishman Ian Tait has enough time to play the monthly rounds being based in the hill capital, but young Binupa is hard pressed as the year end school examination has not only denied him of practise sessions but also turning up for the monthly competition from Colombo has punched deep holes in the time available for his studies. It will be interesting to see how matters will stand at the end of the sixth round.

Lithe and Lissome Niloo Jayatillake a very regular golfer at Victoria just could not find the time for last months medal round which was won by Suwen Selvaratnam but the former continues to lead the table of points with 52 to her credit followed by the latter with 42 points.

An interesting tussle is expected between this duo at the next round and a tussle for supremacy is on the cards and their performance will have a direct bearing on the table of points. School girl Dhanushi Senadheera is lying third with 16 points but has to come with improved display to be in contention for this title.

Schoolboy Klaus Rasmussen like other table leaders continues to lead the Men's Nett Division with 660 points despite giving a miss at the last months competition. Rohan J Perera who also did not play in the last medal round is lying second with 605 points and throwing in a strong challenge is Srinivas Rao with 600 points from the third slot.

Others who are in contention are Thejan de Silva 550 points, Shavinda Fonseka 522 points, Sidath Hemachandra 449 points, Sampath Hemachandra 410 points and Ian Tait and Akhil Rao with 400 points.

Twelve-year-old Maleena Awn from Ladies College Colombo heads the Ladies' Nett Division for yet another month despite missing the last month's competition. Little Maleena Awn well known in the yatching circles made a meteoric rise to the top of this division from the sixth position in August 2005, by accumulating a stupendous 600 points in the competition for September 2005.

She has now 800 points but she must not rest on her laurels and should play in the next round to cement her position in the top as she has a very strong challenger in another school girl Dhanushi Senadeera who has 603 points followed by Sandio NeAndrew 520 points, Roshni Sangani 445 points and Anusha Senadeera 410 points.
