Election leaflets seized from press in Boralesgamuwa

by Chamikara Weerasinghe

Boralesgamuwa police raided a press belonging to the Jathika Hela Urumaya at Papilayana yesterday and seized several packets of election campaign leaflets from that facility.

Boralesgamuwa OIC Chandana Jayanath said that the printed matter had been seized in conformity with election regulations.

The police had also arrested three suspects, one of whom was released on police bail.

JHU Propaganda Secretary Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe told the Daily News that the police had taken all the leaflets from their press. JHU General Secretary Champaka Ranawaka said that it was not yet clear why police should interfere in the matter for they have nothing to do with the leaflets.

"The police had said that the leaflet was defamatory," said Ranawaka.

"If it defames anyone, it is up to that person to go to the Courts, not the police," explained Ranawaka.
