Volleyball Championship :
Outstation schools expected to produce fine spiking

The finals of the DSI Super Sports inter-schools volleyball
championship 2005 will be staged on November 05 and 06 at Sugathadasa
Indoor Stadium commencing at 1.00 p.m. on the first day.
On this the finals of the under 14 boys and girls will be played
between Dammissara MV, Nattandiya and Mihindupura MV, Trincomalee at 1
p.m.
Dilan Perera Minister of Estate Housing, Infrastructure Support and
Deputy Minister for Ports and Aviation and Media will be the chief guest
for the girls final, while Shan Wijelal Silva Southern Province Chief
Minister will be the chief guest for the boys under 14 final. Kithal
Ella MV, Badulla was placed third in the girls under 14 category while
St. Anthony's College Thoduwawa, Puttalam was placed third in the boys
section.
On Sunday November 05 at 8.00 p.m. the finals of the girls under 16
is scheduled to be played between Dammissara MV, Nattandiya and Taxila
MV, Horana. Hungamuwa Vijayaba Vidyalaya won the third place in this
section.
Second session for the day commences with the final of under 16 boys
game. In this game Nattandiya's Dammissara MV takes on Karandeniya MV.
Davisamara MV from Seeduwa who were favoured to reach the finals
finished third.
The most looked forward matches of the tournament begins with the
girls final of the under 18 category. Here Anuradhapura MV is scheduled
to clash with strong Dammissara MV from Nattandiya of Puttalam district.
Nattandiya girls are favoured in this game, but the lass' from
Anuradhapura too are capable of producing a big threat which could lead
the game to its full distance.
Horana Taxila Vidyalaya had be satisfied with third place.
One of the leading volleyball teams in the schools arena from Gampaha
District, Seeduwa's Davisamara MV confront one of the strongest teams
from Puttalam district St. Anthony's College team from Thoduwawa. Both
teams are sure to display skills at their highest levels.
This could lead the game to its maximum length giving the spectators
a top fare of spiking. Dammissara MV another top team from Puttalam
district which had won many titles in the past could not produce their
best and had to content with the third position.
All in all two day of top class spiking is on the cards.
The championship organised by Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation with
the assistance of Education Ministry and Schools Volleyball Association
is sponsored by DSI Group of companies for the seventh successive year.
Year by year the number of teams participating increased and the
sponsors continued their support willingly as this is the national sport
which is played in all parts of the country.
This year a total of 1848 teams from all parts of the country are
taking part in three different age groups under 14, 16 and 18. The
championship was conducted in different stages, district level,
provincial level and the national level of which the finals are just
about to be completed this weekend.
Winners are to receive challenge trophies, cash awards and
certificates at the conclusion of the finals on Sunday. There are
special awards to be given away for best performers of the tournament.
The organisers have also made arrangements to select the best spikers
in the two categories boys and girls.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse will be the chief guest on the final
day and will give away the main awards. Other guests of honour for the
day will be Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Jeewan Kumaratunge,
Deputy Minister for Sports, Sripathi Sooriyaarachchi, Minister for
Estate Housing and Infrastructure and Deputy Minister for Ports and
Aviation and Information and Media and President SLVBF Dilan Perera,
Joint operations Commander Admiral Daya Sandagiri, N. G. P. Navaratne
Additional Secretary Ministry of Education (Education Development) and
Nandadasa Rajapakse Managing Director DSI Group of companies.
Rupavahini Corporation will telecast live the finals on Channel Eye
