Politician killed in Bangladesh
DHAKA, Tuesday (BBC) A leader of Bangladesh's ruling party, has been
killed in a bomb attack in the south-western city of Khulna. Police said
Mizanur Rahman, who belonged to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was
injured in the incident and died on the way to hospital.
Police are investigating the case. No one has claimed responsibility
for the killing so far. Local Maoist groups have killed many journalists
and local politicians in bomb attacks.
The Khulna police commissioner, Khan Sayeed Hassan told the AFP news
agency that unidentified assailants hurled a bomb at Mr Rahman on Sunday
night while he was sitting at a shop in Khulna town, nearly 290
kilometres (180 miles), from the capital Dhaka.
Police said they had found no motive behind the killing yet. A banned
Maoist group, Purba Banglar Communist Party, has claimed responsibility
for such killings in the past.
Bangladesh was hit by a number of bombings in August and in October
that targeted judges, journalists and politicians.
Following those attacks, three Islamic groups have already banned
that the government have described as being terrorist organisations. |
