Polls law violators nabbed

NELUWA Police yesterday took into custody three persons along with a Government vehicle allegedly used for election work in violation of election laws.

The detection was made by Neluwa police near the Mawanna junction in the Neluwa Police area.

The three persons produced before Acting Baddegama Magistrate Jothirathna Kathirahetti were remanded till October 18. Police Election Secretariat DIG Gamini Navaratne yesterday appealed to all Presidential candidates to educate party workers to avoid violating election laws.

Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake on nomination day instructed that no person should use Government vehicles in the campaign, DIG Navaratne told the Daily News yesterday.

DIG Navaratne said following the arrest, about 2,000 people from the Neluwa Police area had surrounded the police station and demanded the release of the three persons taken into custody.

The DIG praised Neluwa Police for handling the situation with tact by dispersing the crowd without any incident.
