For Daya Apparel Export (Pvt) Ltd, to record a 100% increase in
export turnover for the financial year 2004, over the previous year, has
been a singular achievement in team work, goal orientation, disciplines
in quality assurance, schedule maintenance, and compliances in an
industry globally located in highly competitive production locations as
China, Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, etc.
This bears significant implications for an industry that accounts for
53% to Sri Lanka's export revenue under international competition from
countries like China following the abolition of the Muli-Fibre
Agreement.
Thus, the recognition of such achievements, and the bestowing of
accolades by responsible Organisations in Sri Lanka is the only way by
which well performing industries would be encouraged to sustain their
leader status while conveying an important signal to other Industries to
reach similar heights.
Therefore, the commitment of the National Chamber of Exporters to
annually conduct the arduous tasks of evaluating the best performing
export industries and bestowing them with due recognition is indeed
laudable.
The past year witnessed for Daya Apparels not only a 100% increase in
turnover but also an increase in the market share in USA and Canada.
Substantial investments were made in new product developments
facilitating significant revenues. A permanent insecticide impregnated
mosquito net was developed to be produced locally to assist the
International Malaria eradication Programme. Further contributions were
also made in developments in sleepwear, wrinkle free garments etc.
It has been a significant achievement for Daya and Anoma Gamage to
have started a garment factory in the remote Eastern Province in Ampara
in 1992 under the 200 Garment Factory Programme.
Even more daunting had been the myriad logistical problems associated
in an outstation location relating to infrastructure, transport and
access to qualified professionals and skilled workers, this too in the
infancy of the Garment Industry in Sri Lanka.
Their committed focus towards success can be summarised today not
only in turnover achievements, but also in transforming a small factory
of 500 workers in 1992 to 3,000 personnel housed in two state-of-the-art
factories by 2004.
Noteworthy are the roles played by these factories in unemployment
alleviation, socio economic enhancement through wages, secondary and
tertiary businesses in low economic indicator geographic locations.
Today not only does Daya Apparel Exports (Pvt) Ltd possess resources
in qualified and committed personnel, but their efforts have been
recognised both locally and internationally for Merits and Awards as the
International Crown Quality Award at the 16th International Quality
Crown Meeting, London, Bronze Award 2003 Best Corporate Citizen - NCCSL,
Best Exporter Silver Award 2003 - NCE, Best Woman Exporter Gold Award
2003 won in year 2004 - NCE, Business Excellence Gold Award 2004 - SLUN
Friendship Organisation to name the achievements for the last two years
only.
Daya and Anoma Gamage have integrated with the community and the
corporate environment through continuous philanthropy in annual school
book and learning aide donations to more than 15,000 students, medical
assistance, scholarships, sports upliftment through the Daya Sarana
Programme, Temple and religious worship place rehabilitations housing
programme for the homeless etc, free meals to workers, monthly dry
rations, free worker transport, school books and scholarships.
Daya Apparel Export (Pvt) Ltd, looks forward at its corporate future
with confidence while striving to serve all stakeholders in an
environment of excellence. |
