Policeman, 11 civilians injured in grenade attack

A Police Constable and 11 civilians were injured yesterday when a hand grenade was thrown at a water bowser of the Sri Lanka Army which was passing Valachchenai town towards Kalkudah, Batticaloa Division SSP D.D. Ranasinghe told the Daily News yesterday.

No damage has been caused to the Army water bowser, Police said.

A Police Constable who was on his way to Kalkudah after arriving in Valachchenai for duty was injured in the incident.

Eleven injured civilians were admitted to the Valachchenai hospital. They are not in a serious condition, SSP Ranasinghe added.

Meanwhile, Military sources said that the Karuna faction LTTE cadres in a pre-dawn attack captured the LTTE camp in Vadumune.

According to sources 25 to 30 LTTE cadres were in the camp at the time of the attack. Security Forces have received information that two LTTE cadres were killed and six others injured in the incident. The others have fled the area with the casualties and weapons.
