UNP printed more money than PA - Sripathi

Presidential campaign Coordinator and Deputy Minister Sripathi Suriyaarachchi refutes the claim made in Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremasinghe's manifesto, stating the UNP will cease printing money and strengthen the rupee.

Minister Suriyaarachchi in a communique points out that Wickremesinghe had printed the highest amount of currency in the country's history and comparatively less had been printed by the Peoples Alliance (PA).

The PA had also brought down the inflation rate and given much relief to the people. The UNP had promised so much at the run-up to the December 2001 general election and delivered so little.

After all the fuss and rhetoric, the Samurdhi for 650,000 beneficiaries was abolished. The fertiliser subsidy had been abolished and the price of urea had been increased to Rs.1250. The price of bread had gone up by Rs.8.50. Fuel prices had increased eleven times.

Wickremasinghe within his two year period in power, had broken the record of King Chetiya, for telling lies, Suriyaarachchi said.

Suriyaarachchi urged the people to secure the victory of SLFP's Presidential hopeful Mahinda Rajapakse, without being misled by the UNP's false propaganda.
