UNP attitude towards LTTE opportunistic - Anandasangaree

The UNP attitude towards the LTTE is opportunistic and misleading, says Tamil United Liberation Front leader V. Anandasangaree.

Anandasangaree aid the UNP was expecting the LTTE's help for the Presidential Poll.

Referring to the statements purported to have been made by UNP Deputy Secretary Tissa Attanayake to a Tamil newspaper concerning the European Union's ban on LTTE movements in their countries, Anandasangaree said there is no evidence to prove that the LTTE was giving up political killings and other forms of violence.

The LTTE was continuing the conscription of children and other acts of terrorism, he added. In this context, the UNP was acting in an opportunistic manner with the election in mind, he said.

Meanwhile, Attanayake in a news release said his statement to the Thinakkural had been distorted by the State media.

"The contents of the news item have been completely distorted. What I said in the statement was that the ban on the LTTE would automatically cease when the LTTE enters the democratic mainstream," he said.

The news items has been published to gain political mileage, he claimed.
