Biggest- ever forex haul at BIA

THE biggest-ever currency detection by the Customs department was made yesterday when an Indian businessman was detained at the Bandaranaike international Airport with Rs. 45 million in foreign currency.

The passenger travelling to Singapore from India was on transit at the BIA. Among the currencies found, hidden in a false pocket of his hand luggage were euro notes and UK Sterling.

In his statement to the Customs the suspect claimed the currency parcel was handed over to him by another passenger in the flight from India. His passport has revealed more than 100 trips to Sri Lanka.

The suspect was released pending investigations on the understanding that he will appear when summoned. Further investigations will be conducted in collaboration with the Indian customs.

The detection was made by Assistant Customs Director Mali Piyasena. Investigations are conducted by a team of officers led by Assistant Director Leslie Gamini.
