IPM upgrades skills in HR professionals

THE Institute of Personnel Management Sri Lanka (IPM) is one of the
few educational bodies that improves and upgrades skills and knowledge
of human resource professionals in the country, its President Daya
Bollegala said.

The Institute has developed into a leading human resources authority
in Sri Lanka and has contributed significantly to develop and nurture
the human resource management profession during the last few decades.
The primary objective of the Institute is to promote and develop
principles, techniques and practices of human resource management and to
ensure a high level of professional standard and competencies among its
members and those who are aspiring to become members, Bollegala said.
The IPM has revised all their syllabuses in consistent with modern
global trends for their students.
In 1959, a small group of professionals in personnel management
founded the Institute with the objective of developing the profession of
Personal Management has now grown into the most sought after human
development management qualification in the country.
The Institute conducts three educational programmes for all
categories including school leavers to top HR managers in the country.
The foundation course in human resource management is mainly designed
for school leavers.
The certificate course in human resource management is for working
middle managers.
The professional qualification in human resource management is a
two-year course with a research paper which IPM is now in the process of
negotiating with local universities to recognise this qualification as
an entry qualification for their MBA degree programmes, he said.
He said that their certificate level programme is very popular among
school leavers in the country and they could not cope with the demand.
IPM is conducting several programmes including foundation and
certificate programmes in Kandy and are expected to take their courses
to Galle and Kurunegala due to the heavy demand.
Bollegala said that HR Management has now emerged as a separate and
distinct discipline like medicine, law, engineering and it plays a
significant role in the success of the organisation and the nation.
All their programmes cover mainly on the behaviour of human beings,
motivation, leadership, counselling, training and development
performance management and recruitment and selection.
"We have three months certificate programmes in training and
development, counseling. It also organises seminars, workshops, lectures
and sessions on HR Management for the corporate sector as well as public
sector," he said.
The faculty of the institute consists of qualified personnel, who are
prominent in the HR management in the country. For the benefit of
students, the IPM has a well-equipped library, Internet caf, and student
study areas as well.
The Institute also arranges loan schemes with Samapath Bank. It is
also negotiating with few other banks as well to provide loan facilities
for students.
The IPM in association with the University of Southern Queensland (USQ)
Australia inaugurated a Master of Management Degree Programme with Human
Resource Management as a specialisation.
The Institute has also setup a Job Placement Centre to help
interested people in getting into HR jobs.
The Institute has developed a software package to match job seekers
job prescription and job suppliers job description to support both
parties for that purpose, Bollegala said.
The Institute has plans for a new four storied building. The new
building will have an auditorium, computer lab, library student study
centre and many other facilities, he said.
IPM holds the annual HR Professional Gold Award, sponsored by a
corporate entity. IPM also conducts programmes for citizens as part of
their Corporate Social Responsibility project.
IPM is a member of the Organisation of Professional Associations in
Sri Lanka and also a Member of the Asia Pacific Federation of Human
Resource Management through which the Institute is affiliated to the
World Federation of Personnel Management Association. |
