Kelani Swimming Association win boys championship

There was keen competition at the Gampaha District Swimming Meet, held on August. 6 and 7, at the Regent International College, Miriswatte, Gampaha, swimming pool.

For the second consecutive year, the meet was organized by Regent International College and sponsored by Elephant Lemonade, SriLankan Airlines, Sri Lanka Insurance, Metropolitan, Commercial Bank, Nations Trust Bank, People's Bank and Rano Motor (Pvt) Ltd.

Six hundred and three swimmers from 29 clubs and schools in the Gampaha District participated and 25 new records were set on day two of the meet.

The age group categories were; Under 10, 12, 14, 16 and over 19.

The schools and clubs which entered the fray were: Andiambalama Safety Swimming School, Basilica College, Ragama, Bandaranaike College, Gampaha, De Mazenod College, Kandana, Dolphin Swimming Club, Negombo, Gampaha District Swimming and Life Saving Association, Gothami Junior Squad, Gampaha, Holy Cross College, Gampaha, Jayakody Maha Vidhayala, Ganemulla, Matunayake Swimming Club, Kelani Swimming and Life Saving Association, Lyceum International School, Wattala, Neptune Aquatic Sports Club, Gampaha, Newsted Girls' School, Negombo, OKI Swimming School, Wattala, Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha, Regent International College, Gampaha, Sea Lion Swimming club, Gampaha, Sri Bodhi Vidyalaya, Gampaha, Sri Siddhartha Kumara Maha Vidhyalaya, Gampaha, St. Anthony's College, Wattala, St. Paul's Balika, Kelaniya, St. Peter's College, Gampaha, St. Sebastian's College, Kandana, Thakshila Maha Vidyalaya, Gampaha, Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha and Yasodhara Balikaa Vidyalaya, Gampaha.

The Boys' Championship was won by Kelani Swimming and Life Saving Association with 111 points, closely followed by Katunayake Swimming Club with 107 points.

It was about the same in the Girls' Championship, where Viharamahadevi Balika Gampaha with 175 points nosed ahead of Holy Cross College, Gampaha who obtained 162 points.

The meet was sanctioned by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union. Wing Commander Sanjaya de Silva was the chief guest at the awards presentation.

Under 10 - Parami Ranawaka, Neptune Aquatic Sports Club.

Under 12 - Thilina Punsala, Ratnavali Balika, Gampaha.

Under 14 - Cindy Nayakkara, Katunayake Swimming Club.

Under 16 - Charitha Deshani, Holy Cross College, Gampaha

Under 19 - Dumini de Silva, Newstead Girl's School, Negombo.

Over 19 - Kalpani Nandasena, Vihara Mahadevi Balika.

Age Group Champions:

Boys:

Under 10 - Isuru Wickremanayake, Neptune Aquatic Sports Club.

Under 12 - Avin Abeyratne, Sribodhi Vidyalaya.

Under 14 - S.I. Dissanayake, Bandaranaike Central College, Gampaha.

Under 16 - Chathura Perera, Kelani Swimming and Life Saving Association.

Under 19 - W. Withana, Gampaha District Swimming Life Saving Club.

Over 20 - B. Pathirana, Katunayake Swimming Club.
