ICLP holds Diploma in Commercial Arbitration

THE Institute for the Development of Commercial Law and Practice (ICLP), non-profit organisation, established in 1992 by the Business Community to promote international principles and practices for the advancement of commercial law, is offering a comprehensive diploma course on commercial arbitration.

ICLP facilitates both ad hoc and institutional arbitrations in Sri Lanka. Arbitration is considered as an invaluable tool in the Commercial sector for conflict resolution, as it follows strict international standards, having been created in conjunction with the Swedish International Enterprise Development Corporation (SWEDECORP) and the Swedish Institute for Legal Development (SILD).

This course is intended for persons who have gained academic or professional qualification or experience in a professional practice such as law, accountancy, engineering, banking, architecture, IT, etc.

The course offers wide knowledge of the laws of arbitration in Sri Lanka in terms of Arbitration Act No. 11 of 1995, and other forms of international institutional arbitration such as the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and UNCITRAL Rules and Model Law.

The panel of lecturers would include eminent professionals such as Justice Saleem Marsoof, PC, (Judge of the Supreme Court), S. S. Wijeratne, (Secretary General of ICLP and Chairman of LAC), President Counsel K. Kanag-Iswaran, Walter Ladduwahetty (Financial Ombudsman of Sri Lanka), Prof. Chitra Weddikara, (Lecturer University of Moratuwa), Dr. Harsha Cabraal (Attorney at Law), E. M. G. de Zilva (Engineer), Ananda Ranasinghe (Attorney at Law and Engineer), Uditha Egalahaewa (former State Counsel), M. N. Idroos (State Counsel), Ms. Shehara Varia (Partner F. J. and G. de Saram). Lectures will also be supplemented by practical workshops from practising arbitrators and arbitration experts.

The course duration is four months, commencing from November 5. Lectures would be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at ICLP Arbitration Centre 61, Carmel Road, Colombo 03.

The course is limited for 35 participants and applications will be taken on a first come first served basis.
