UNP MP praises President's peace efforts

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has made sincere attempts to find a solution to the ethnic conflict and bring peace, said Kandy district UNP MP Keheliya Rambukwelle.

The President implemented programmes like the Sudu Nelum campaign to achieve that target, Rambukwelle told a seminar on 'Let us achieve lasting peace and development' in Kandy. It was organised by the Commission for Justice, Peace, Human Development and Human Rights.

Rambukwelle said people were talking about lasting peace for a long time. It was "the peace" that was sold to the people by all political party leaders, since the ethnic problem cropped up.

Rambukwelle said there should be private universities in the country.

The educational system should be amended to suit the country's needs. Sri Lanka would be a beautiful country, if all worked with dedication to bring a solution to the ethnic conflict. President Kumaratunga's attempts in this regard are commendable, the MP said. Central Provincial Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake said all should be brought to one platform and discussed what solution should be decided upon.

"Views of national leaders like the late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike has relevance even today," he said.
