FCCISL, SMED promote cleaner production in industries
 

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka with Small and Medium Enterprise Developers (SMED) will promote cleaner production in the industries of Ekala and its suburbs.

This aims to with a view to initiate environmental friendly production in them resulting those industries to increase their profits by implementing cleaner production technology.

A five day training programme on "Cleaner Production Assessment" for 11 industries was held at the Centre for Cleaner Production and Environmental Awareness at the Ja-Ela Industrial Estate recently.

Manager Environmental and Industrial Engineering Nihal Cooray who conducted the programme said that at a time when pollution levels of the area was increasing, a protective approach such as cleaner production would provide a sustainable solution which will help the companies to minimise waste from every step in their production and would make sustainable profits.

This would also lead to less pollution.

Deputy Director General, Pollution Control Division K. H. Muthukudaarachchi hoped that many industries will adopt cleaner production concepts as a measure to bring down pollution loads and pollution of the water bodies and air.

He said that implementing cleaner production is the best course of action to achieve goals of sustainable development.

Cleaner production is beneficial to industrialists and business people can be done by improving efficiency, reducing end of pipe treatment cost, improving product quality and competitiveness.
