Death of Earl Abeysekera
Earl Abeysekera, known to his friends as EEC died at the age of 90,
on Thursday night at the Oasis Hospital following a heart attack.
Abeysekera joined the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL) at
the age of 19 in 1934 as an assistant to ANCL Chairman D.R. Wijewardene
and was elevated as a Director of the Company in 1968, which post he
held until the Government takeover in August 1973.
He also served as the Assistant Secretary, Secretary and the General
Manager of the Company for sometime. With the takeover, he joined Lake
House Investments as one of its Directors and was in charge of the Lake
House Bookshop until his retirement at the age of 79 in 1993.
He is the husband of Anne Abeysekera, former staff member of the
Sunday Observer and the Daily News and one of the Secretaries of the
Company. He leaves his wife and seven children. Cremation will take
place at Jawatte cemetery and cortege will leave after religious
services at his residence at 10, E.A. Cooray Mawatha, Wellawatte. |
