Susil, a journalist and consultant editor of the “ Tharunee”- women’s
weekly in an interview with the “ Artscope” said : “ I stepped into the
world of journalism in 1978 as a stringer and was made permanent in
1983. After working for “ Dinamina”, “ Navayugaya” and “ Sarasaviya” I
was appointed as the Chief Editor of the “ Sarasaviya”. Still I like to
work as a film artiste rather than working for newspapers”, he said.
Commenting on the present situation of teledramas telecast over
various channels, Susil says: Our teledramas have achieved a certain
degree of recognition. We can watch them free of charge unlike films and
stage plays. For films and stage plays, we have to get ready beforehand.
But we can watch teledramas leisurely at home. That is why teledramas
have become a major entertaining media in today’s society.
About 15 teledramas are telecast over various channels per week. But
I am against the present policy of telecasting Indian teledramas dubbed
into Sinhala. There is a prime time belt for teledramas like 7.30pm,
8.35pm and 9.30. But most of the private channels have utilised this
prime belt to telecast foreign productions”.
Praising the government policy on the selection committee of
teledramas Susil said: “ Several years ago, when we produced a teledrama,
the biggest problem we faced was to find a sponsor for the teledrama.
Although a producer spent a lot of money on the creation, he would
only receive very little. But the present government has appointed a
committee to preview teledramas. The committee will select the
teledramas and the time belt as well. There should also be a 9.30pm time
belt for teledramas”. Meanwhile Susil’s latest stage play titled “ Pora
Kukullu” based on a Russian play translated by poet Ariyawansa Ranaweera
will go on the boards shortly.
Susil is ambitious to direct a film as he has gathered enough
experience to do so.
