LHI's quality assurance system obtains ISO 9000 certification

The Country Manager of SGS Lanka, S.G. Dharmadasa (centre left) hands over the ISO 9001:2000 certificate to Chief Executive/Director of LHI Malith Mendis (centre right). Looking on is K.M. Nanseer (right), and Sanjeewa Wickramaratne (left) of LHI.

The Lanka Hydraulic Institute Ltd. (LHI) has obtained ISO 9000 certification for the company's Quality Management System. LHI, the premier Sri Lankan consultants in Hydraulic and Coastal Engineering, has re-established their capabilities in this field with increasing exposure to projects abroad.

"With a certified Quality Management System LHI has a proven consistency in quality outputs and would be able to better integrate with their partner companies world over. Implementation of a Quality Assurance system and obtaining certification is a part of the business plan of LHI.

Our QA system also encompasses ensuring quality data inputs and assessing risks in projects" Chief Executive/Director of LHI, Malith Mendis said. The Lanka Hydraulic Institute are Consultants in Hydraulic Engineering with expertise in coastal engineering, water resources and urban water.

LHI maintains a hydraulics laboratory at Katubedda, Moratuwa and has capabilities in hydrodynamic mathematical modelling, physical modelling and field investigations.

In addition to working on projects in Sri Lanka, LHI has engaged in projects in Brunei, Bhutan, Iran and is currently engaged in a project in the Maldives. LHI are partner Consultants for the Colombo South Harbour Development Project.

"This I believe is the first time a Sri Lankan Consulting organisation has obtained ISO 9000 certification. We envision that LHI's profile internationally will be enhanced by a certified Quality Management system. We believe that the time has come for Sri Lanka to export advanced knowledge by value adding and use of IT and thereby discourage the brain drain", the Management Representative in the implementation of the QA system, K. M. Nanseer said.
