Govt. allocates Rs.11,200 m for irrigation rehabilitation and community development

The Government has launched Rs. 11,200 million project for irrigation, rehabilitation and community development in eight districts in the North and East and four outlying districts.

The project to be implemented under two stages is co-funded by the government and the World Bank.

The districts covered by the project are Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara, Moneragala, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and Puttalam. Stage I of the project will aim at the development of 396 villages while stage II will develop 240 villages. The stage one had covered areas such as irrigation rehabilitation and community development, income generation and infrastructure development, the stage two anticipates the extension of same facilities to villages at a cost of Rs. 5,320 million. The project is to be completed by 2010.

Government officials including the Divisional Secretaries who are in-charge of the implementation of the project are being provided training at present, Community Development Head, P. Periyasamy said.
