by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi
One in ten persons living in the North Central Province has been
found suffering from kidney related diseases, a research reveals.
Minister of Indigenous Medicine Tissa Karaliyedda said a medical
research has revealed that one in every ten persons living in the North
Central province are suffering from kidney ailments.
The Minister explained that this had created an alarming situation
and could be considered as the worst catastrophe after the prolonged war
in the North - East.
A Ministry spokesman attributed this situation to the high density of
chloride in the water used from drinking purposes in the area.
He noted that using of aluminium containers to store water and also
aluminium cooking utensils has also contributed to this situation.
As an initiative to resolve this critical issue, the indigenous
Medicine Ministry has now taken steps to distribute clay pots and other
utensils for cooking and other purposes.
"Those clay equipment are distributed free of charge to encourage and
practise them to use clay pots and utensils to their house work," the
spokesman added.
Another unique feature is that those earthenware items are purchased
from the families who are engaged in clayware industry from the same
area.
"This would help to generate employment while promoting the health of
the people," he added.
Recently, 400 families in the Kongollawa in the Medawachchiya
electorate were given these sets of earthenware free of charge from the
Ministry.
"Besides, the Ministry has launched a house to house campaign to
educate the public on the importance of utilising earthenware items," he
added. |
