Indonesia and Aceh rebels to sign truce Aug. 15
HELSINKI, Sunday (Reuters)
Indonesia's government and Aceh rebels will sign a truce on Aug. 15
to bring peace to the province after a 30-year-conflict that has taken
over 12,000 lives, both sides said on Sunday after talks in Helsinki.
Jakarta and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), which has dropped its
demand for independence for the province on Sumatra island, made a
last-minute compromise on the guerrillas' demands to be able to form a
political party and run in Acehnese elections. |
