Death of IIESL founder president
Engineer B.R.M. Fernando, pioneer president of the Institution of
Incorporated Engineers, Sri Lanka (IIESL) passed away on July 11. He was
the president of the Institution during the sessions of 1977/78,
1978/79, 1979/80, 1980/81 and 1986/87. On completion of National Diploma
in Technology from the Hardy Senior Technical College, he joined
Industrial Development Board as an Engineering Diplomate. During this
period there was an urgent necessity to establish a professional
association to look after the interests of the Engineering Diplomate
community.
BRM with the support of other committed Engineering Diplomates
established All Ceylon Engineering Diplomates Association in 1977.
The establishment of Institution of Incorporated Engineers, Sri Lanka
by an Act of Parliament as the only professional institution for
engineering diplomates is the result of his dedication. He selected the
training field as his career because he was keen in sharing his
knowledge and experience with others.
At the time of death, he was functioning as Training Manager, Sri
Lanka Ports Authority. He was to celebrate his 56th birthday in July
this year. President and the Council of Management of IIESL request the
members to assemble near the entrance to the Dehiwala/Mount Lavinia
cemetery at 4.30 p.m. today to pay last respect to the Pioneer
President. Cremation will take place at 5.00 p.m. |
